Bobwhite Quail were surprisingly and pleasantly abundant across Dunn and neighboring Pawnee Prairies. We even flushed a covey of chicks along our drive. This guy was kind enough to find a nice perch to pose on.

Harrison: “Birds may not build nest until several weeks after mating but are inseparable at this time. Nest seldom found except by accident; close-sitting female will not flush until almost stepped upon.”
I can’t quite put my finger on why, but I really, really like this picture. What a beautiful bird.
