Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Did you know…?

The YBSS can be identified from other woodpeckers by their drumming?  Sapsuckers have a stuttering, Morse-code like cadence to their drumming.  Listen for this the next time you are in the woods.

  1. Please pardon my noticing irrelevant details but, is that a sassafras limb in the foreground? If so, I hope you won’t mind me further mentioning that I rather like “sapsucker” and “sassafras” in the same sentence. That is all.

Love that bird! Such a welcome sight and sound in the winter woods.
