"What a thousand acres of Silphiums looked like when they tickled the bellies of the buffalo is a question never again to be answered, and perhaps not even asked." -Aldo Leopold
What a treat this must have been! How frequent an inland migrant is the Caspian?
Hal Harrison notes, “In nesting areas, Ring-Billed Gull is most likely neighbor. Although formerly robbed of its eggs for food, this species has generally escaped depletion by hunters owing to its extreme shyness. Unlike most terns, Caspians do not normally attack human intruders who enter nesting colonies.”
Have you any notion how intensely I would relish the experience of visiting such a nesting colony (from a non-intrusive distance, of course)? Of all people, I suppose you might 😉
